This innovative elastomer-membrane system plays a crucial role in the safety and efficiency of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles.
What makes the rubber-PTFE composite parts so special?
The elastomer membrane composite part was specially developed to fulfil two important functions in the Li-ion batteries of electric vehicles:
- Efficient pressure equalisation: The component ensures that pressure within the battery is distributed evenly during temperature fluctuations or charging cycles.
- Burst protection: In the event of a potential accident that could lead to a thermal runaway, the component rapidly vents the pressure to the outside to prevent explosive reactions.
Advanced solution: semi-permeable PTFE film
The use of a special semi-permeable sintered PTFE film offers several advantages:
- Prevention of moisture ingress: despite pressure equalisation, the battery remains protected from harmful moisture.
- High resistance to extreme temperature fluctuations and mechanical stress.
These protective membrane burst discs ensure the highest safety standards and play a key role in minimising the risk of battery fires or explosions.

ZORGE Precision through vulcanisation and injection moulding
The rubber-PTFE composite parts are manufactured using a specially developed vulcanisation mould. The injection moulding process bonds PTFE films with specific air permeability rates into a firmly bonded composite. Particular attention is paid to ensuring exact compliance with the specified air exchange rate in order to guarantee the functionality and safety of the membrane burst disc.
